How zodiac matching works
The twelve animals are linked by fixed relationships. Some form harmony groups and some form conflict pairs, based on the branch positions on the traditional compass. The matching is about temperament and rhythm, read symbolically.
Harmony and conflict pairs
Folk tradition highlights the "three harmonies" (三合) and "six harmonies" (六合) as easy-going matches, and the "six clashes" (六冲) and "six harms" (六害) as friction-prone ones. These are conversation starters about style, not predictions of failure or success.
The element layer
Each sign also carries a fixed element (Rat Water, Ox Earth, Tiger Wood, and so on). Some matching looks at whether the two elements support or drain each other. It adds nuance, but it is still a symbolic layer — see the five elements guide for the framework.
