What are the Three Talents?
The five-grid system (Wu Ge) gives five number totals from a name's stroke counts. The Three Talents (三才, San Cai) is the relationship among three of those grids:
- Heaven grid (天格) — from the surname; read as the ancestral / outer environment.
- Human grid (人格) — surname + first given-name character; read as the person's core self and main fortune.
- Earth grid (地格) — the given-name characters; read as early-life / foundation energy.
Each grid total maps to a five-element attribute (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). The Three Talents is the pattern formed by those three elements — Heaven above, Human in the middle, Earth below.
How the three grids are derived
Using traditional KangXi stroke counts: the Heaven grid is the surname's stroke total (plus one for a single-character surname); the Human grid is the surname total plus the first given-name character; the Earth grid is the given-name characters' total (plus one for a single-character given name). These are the same building blocks used in the five-grid method.
Reading the configuration
A configuration is judged by whether the three elements support one another. A Heaven→Human→Earth chain that generates in sequence (for example Wood generating Fire generating Earth) is read as smooth and harmonious; a chain with clashes is read as more frictional. The Human grid, being the person's core, carries the most weight, but the three are always read as one small system.
Three Talents vs the 81 numbers
The Three Talents and the 81-number meanings are two layers of the same name. The 81 numbers tell you the meaning of each grid's total; the Three Talents tell you how those totals get along. A name is usually evaluated by looking at both, plus the elemental strokes and, ideally, the person's BaZi favourable elements.

A balanced way to use it
Treat the Three Talents as one signal among several — useful for noticing overall harmony, but not a verdict on a person. Names carry meaning and culture far beyond any single numerology layer.
