Zodiac & Five Elements: The Element of Each Animal

Each Chinese zodiac animal carries a native Five Element. This fixed layer adds flavor to the signs — and it is different from the rotating Na Yin element of your birth year.

The element of each animal

ZodiacElement
Rat (鼠)Water
Ox (牛)Earth
Tiger (虎)Wood
Rabbit (兔)Wood
Dragon (龍)Earth
Snake (蛇)Fire
Horse (馬)Fire
Goat (羊)Earth
Monkey (猴)Metal
Rooster (雞)Metal
Dog (狗)Earth
Pig (豬)Water

Native element vs Na Yin element

There are two layers. The native element above is fixed to the animal and never changes. On top of that, the 60-year cycle adds a Na Yin (纳音) element to each year. So you can be a "Fire Tiger" by Na Yin while Tiger itself stays Wood — both are true, just at different levels.

What the element adds

In folk reading the element shades a sign's character: a Water Rat reads differently from an Earth Dog. Treat it as a descriptive nuance, not a ranking. It helps explain why two people of the same animal can feel quite different.

Frequently asked questions

What element is each zodiac animal?

By the standard fixed mapping: Rat and Pig are Water; Ox, Dragon, Goat, and Dog are Earth; Tiger and Rabbit are Wood; Snake and Horse are Fire; Monkey and Rooster are Metal. These are the 'native' elements of each animal.

Is this the same as the year's Na Yin element?

No. The animal's native element is fixed, but each 60-year cycle also layers a Na Yin (纳音) element on top of the year. A person may be a 'Fire Tiger' by Na Yin while Tiger itself stays Wood — two different layers.

Does the element change how a sign behaves?

In folk reading the element adds a flavor: a Water Rat reads differently from an Earth Dog. It is a descriptive layer, not a judgment — useful for nuance, not a verdict.

Where can I see my own sign and element?

Your zodiac animal comes from your birth year, and the year's Na Yin element adds a second layer. Our zodiac compatibility and BaZi calculator both surface these for you.
