Where the idea comes from
The twelve zodiac animals are also the twelve Earthly Branches (地支), and each branch is associated with a direction on the compass — Rat north, Rabbit east, Horse south, and so on. Linking a sign to a direction is a natural extension of that old branch–direction system.
Tai Sui and the conflict direction
Folk calendar tradition assigns Tai Sui (太岁), the yearly guardian, to a direction each year. The opposite side is sometimes called the "conflict" direction (岁破). These are part of seasonal ritual language — symbolic ways of marking the year, not literal warnings.
Playful, not prescriptive
